Where I am from

"Alor Setar, as seen from Menara Alor Setar" by gardenchime

Alor Setar is the state capital of Kedah - the rice bowl of Malaysia, albeit not much of that is left here these days compared to what it was 20 years ago. It's not exactly a place where one would visit for a holiday but Alor Setar makes a nice stop over if you are coming in to / going out from Malaysia (from / to Hatyai, Thailand via Dannok) or Langkawi.

The name of the city comes in the combination of 2 words: "Alor", meaning small stream, and "Setar" from Setar tree (pokok Setar) ~ scientific name Bouea macrophylla Griff . Alor Setar is also the administrative center for distrct of Kota Setar, besides being the state capital. Alor Setar had been officially granted as a city – the 9th in Malaysia, on 21st December 2003, during which the spelling of its name was officially changed to Alor Star from the prior Alor Setar. The name was returned back to Alor Setar on January 15, 2009 to reflect the origin of the naming.

There is an interesting story about how the name came about... ... (to be continue soon!)

Alor Setar is relaxing, slow paced and still retained it's town-city charm. If you are a local, you can almost be certain to bump into someone you know when you go anywhere.

Our family is on both Couchsurfing and BeWelcome, we started hosting in 2013 and we are shifting to be more help exchange orientated now as we also have profiles on Workaway and HelpX. Do look us up in those website if you ever feel inclined to stay with us!

Bus service: Alor Setar - Kuala Kedah

"Kuala Kedah - Alor Setar bus service by HBR" by gardenchime

Bus service is available from from Alor Setar to Kuala Kedah. Ferry terminal to Langkawi is situated in this small fishing village town.

The route is run by HBR Group of Companies. Usually there is a sign in front of the bus - could be hand written - indicating "Shahab Perdana", "Pekan Rabu" and "Kuala Kedah". The bus may or may not be air conditioned (depending on which specific bus you are getting on) and its white in colour.

The route starts at Shahab Perdana (Alor Setar's bus terminal) and it makes some stops around the town at such places as former Alor Setar's General Hospital (now Kota Setar District Health Office), Pekan Rabu, Simpang Kuala, Telok Chengai, Telok Kechai, Batas Paip, Kuala Kedah. The route ends at Kampung Nelayan. You would have to tell the conductor where is your destination and the conductor will let you know how much is the fare. Be as specific as possible. Most of them are nice, even though they don't speak much English and will help you to make sure that you arrive at your correct stop if you can tell them where exactly you want to alight.

From Kuala Kedah to Terminal Shahab Perdana (Alor Setar)

If you have come to Kuala Kedah from Langkawi and want to take a bus downtown, walk around the car park in front of the ferry jetty building and wait for the bus beside the road, at the same side with the building (do not cross the road). The road is marked as "Jalan Tok Pasai" in Google Map. There is no bus stop outside of the jetty building. You will have to flag the bus down when you see it coming.

From Terminal Shahab Perdana to Kuala Kedah

Wait for the bus at the local bus waiting area at the back section of the bus terminal building. The area is behind the intercity express bus queue area.

The bus terminal is not exactly located in the town center. If you want to walk around town and see some interesting sites, it is advisable that you alight at Pekan Rabu.

The service runs daily and it starts at 6.30 am on weekdays. On Friday, Saturday and public holidays, the service starts at 7.00 am. The last bus is at 10.00 pm. But do not rely too much the accuracy of the bus schedule.
